SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT GOALS:

The Holy Name Social Studies Department seeks to impart to its students the following historical thinking skills:


                        

1.  Causation

 

§        Students will be able to analyze the causes of historical events and trends and their effects.

 

2.  Comparison

 

§        Students will be able to compare and/or contrast historical events, figures, trends, and concepts across time and place (including comparison/contrast with the present).

 

3.  Contextualization

 

§        Students will be able to use their knowledge of history to put historical events, figures, trends, and concepts in their appropriate historical context and understand the impact of historical context on events, figures, trends, and concepts.

 

4.  Historical Argumentation

 

§        Students will be able to form an argument in response to an analytical question.

 

5.  Analysis of Historical Sources

 

§        Students will be able to analyze historical sources, including primary source documents.

 

6.  Use of Historical Evidence

 

§        Students will be able to use evidence from historical sources to support an argument.

 

7.  Synthesis

 

§        Students will be able to synthesize information from different historical sources and/or periods and use it to support one argument or point.
